God's Reminders

Tim Savage

Scripture
But I will make Pharaoh's heart stubborn so I can multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt. (Exodus 7:3)
Observation
It's notable to me that God tells Moses that He will harden Pharaoh's heart hard so that His power can be shown to all. God sometimes purposely puts obstacles in our way so that His glory can be manifested. We hear it time and again, friends or family are slowed by illness or financial catastrophe and only then, when faced with problems greater than themselves, do they really, truly turn to God to experience His love, mercy and power.

For most of us it's unfortunate, but true: we wouldn't have faith in God if we felt like we were in control and could overcome all challenges. I think that's why it's so hard for the wealthy or powerful to have a deep and strong relationship with Him. They're self-made and self-sufficient, they have no need for God because they're safe and comfortable within their own world. But take that same person and strip him of his power, money and influence and all of a sudden he understands that he isn't in control and that God is. And it's through that humbling experience and vulnerability that they're willing and able to come in to a deeper relationship with Him. It's also through this refining process burning away those things the world values that they're finally able to see what is really important in life.
Application
So God not only allows tough circumstances and challenges in to our lives, but verse 3 makes it clear that He will also purposely make them happen. And we should be glad that He does because we will usually be headed down a wrong path or have our priorities scrambled and need His strong reminder. God does it because He loves us enough to correct us, He loves us enough to discipline us and He loves us so much that He doesn't want to lose us. I will try to live my life in such a way that I don't need an eye-opening correction, but if God sends one my way, may I understand and comply with His infinite wisdom and be glad that He loves me enough to save me.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the powerful lesson of Moses and Pharaoh. Thank You for loving us so much that You will correct us if needed. Please grant me the wisdom and strength to accept Your discipline and correction and help me to lead a life that pleases You.

In Jesus name,
Amen
