A Tub of Pride

Tim Savage

Scripture
"Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, 'Friend, we have a better place for you!' Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." (Luke 14:10-11)
Observation
Humility. I can never hear too many lessons on humility. Pride seems to seep in to my pores imperceptibly, when I'm not looking, when I'm busy working on other things, when I least expect it. Bam, I turn around one day and there it is - I'm dragging around a big tub of pride. It's so big that those around me can clearly see it, they've actually noticed it for a while. Of course, I can't see it, in fact, I've convinced myself that I would never drag around a big tub of pride; but there it is, my tub is full.

Like the guests at the party in this passage in Luke, I want the seat of honor, even if I don't admit it. My pride is strong and sometimes it controls me and I have to constantly watch it and temper it. I have to keep dumping out that tub. None of us want the humiliation of taking that seat of honor, only to be asked to move for someone who is truly worthy of it. But neither should we have false humility - we've all seen that and it's not pretty.
Application
No, we have to maintain a true and sincere humility. A humbleness that comes from understanding God and our role as His servant. We need to remember that we can't take credit for anything we are or we've done. He created us and all things come from Him.

When my tub of pride starts to fill, I need to have that seat of honor pulled out from under me, but better yet, I need to remember my place as a servant of the Most-High God and make humility a part of every thought and every action.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Please grant me a heart of humility. Thank You for gentle reminders of my pride instead of consequences I really deserve, may I learn from your mercy and grace and become an example to those around me.

In Jesus name,
Amen
