Making Progress

Elwin Ahu

Scripture
"As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, Flee for your lives! Don't look back, and don't stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away! (Gen. 19:17)
Observation
By God's grace, the angels urged Lot to flee from the city in order to avoid the destruction the Lord was about to inflict on the people. But, rather than moving forward, Lot hesitated, probably uncomfortable with having to move from his hometown, from the place where he developed a level of comfort for himself and his family; or, perhaps he was unsure of the word of the angels, wondering whether God would really want him to move into a land of uncertainty. And seeing his reaction, the angels implored Lot to flee, "don't look back, and don't stop anywhere," but move on ahead to the land God had prepared for him and his family.

There is a tendency common to all men (and women) to resist change. We will justify, complain, rebel and/or secure as many reasons as possible to satisfy the status quo, even if doing so would mean "death" to our growth or our future. We seem to love living life looking through the rear view mirror or placating the present. But we have a tendency to fear the future, whether it's a fear of failing or of the unknown, and we miss the bigger picture of life that God has already planned for us. We all love to live comfortably in our own little niche in life, but by doing so we risk harm to ourselves and those around us, and we forfeit the blessings and protection God has waiting in our future.
Application
I wonder how many blessings I may have forfeited because of my dissatisfaction with progress and my affinity with the status quo. I wonder how much farther down the road of life I would be driving had I won over my fear of the future, or had I not delayed stepping out according to God's direction. God will always call us forward, so that we can enjoy the life ahead of us, but we need to trust Him enough to take those steps forward.

"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland." (Isa. 43:19)

His best laid plans are yet ahead for my life, for my family, for my ministry. Whatever He's asking of me, I cannot remain satisfied with where I am. Whether it's increasing my time with my family, in my devotions with Him, in my study time, in this next season I must continue to make progress with my life, one step at a time.
Prayer
Lord, help me to walk in step with You, never behind and never ahead of You, but living according to Your call upon my life. Help me to develop such a trust and faith in You that when You call, I will listen and obey, and in doing so, I will make progress in my life.
