"Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. As a resultů most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly. "(Phil 1:12-13)
We can all look good when the sun is shining, when we have money in the bank and everything's coming up roses. But that may not necessarily be what advances the Gospel. Paul is in prison and everything he has was taken. It was like trying to win a race with both feet shackled or compete in a boxing match with one hand tied behind your back. Yet, Paul continued to look to Jesus for His strength and he never took his eyes off the goal of the high calling. And due to this, the Gospel was advanced.

How often I think that the way I will really do well for the Gospel's sake and for others is when everything has come together and I'm flying high. We see in magazines and reports the stories of those who made it, and we look to them as a level we want to aspire to. But we seldom read about those who are still in prison or in shackles who are rejoicing and looking to God for their strength.

These are the heroes. Other levels of success may be an aspiration, but these are the heroes that give me INSPIRATION! These are the ones that will inspire me in the long run. The others may have gained a short-lived "celebrity" status, but the heroes are the ones that great churches are made of. These are the ones who advance the cause of Christ. These are the ones that will inspire faith and commitment to those who will come after them.
I will continue to be willing to experience seasons of suffering for the sake of the Gospel. I can never disregard these times as wasted, but instead, as times of worth in order for me to glean life-lessons. I must keep my eyes fixed on the goal of Christ's calling for me, regardless of whether the season filled with sunshine or shadows, whether it is winter or spring, because when I am following Jesus' best, December is the same as May.
Thank you Father for Paul's life of such example. I will gather my inspiration not from worldly examples, but biblical ones. Otherwise I will be following the wrong vision in my mind of what success is all about. I can have my public GPS reading: "Destination: God" but I can actually be following a whole different highway because my main GPS is not what others see. It is what is in my mind.

Thank you for always mentoring me through men like Paul and others.
