Watch Out, Cliff Ahead

Tim Savage

Scripture
"Peter said to him, "Even if everyone else deserts you, I never will."
Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, Peter—this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me." "No!" Peter declared emphatically. "Even if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!" And all the others vowed the same." (Mark 14:29-31)
Observation
Can't you just picture Peter here with Jesus? His chest all puffed out, acting brave and macho, proclaiming with pride his undying loyalty. I can see it in my head - and I can relate! How often I've made some sort of sweeping declaration that either subtly puts someone else down or builds me up. How foolish.

I actually feel sorry for Peter each time I read this story, knowing that in just a few verses, he will deny even knowing his Lord and Savior, the Son of the Living God. When you build yourself up so high, it's a long way down to the bottom when you fall.
Application
It's so true - pride always precedes a fall. One of my many weaknesses is pride. I am too quick to take credit, too quick to deflect blame and too quick to feel good about myself when things go well. I need to remember who should always get the credit - God - where would I be and who would I be without Him? If He chooses to bless my family or my ministry or a project that I'm working on, then I should celebrate, but in everything, glorify Him.

My job should be to make Jesus famous, not me, and that will only happen through a heart and spirit of humility. Humility takes work - sometimes it needs to be a daily, even hourly, reminder, but better that than the long fall that awaits us when we puff up our chests with pride.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the many blessings you give to my family and me. I am so undeserving and yet you continue give. Please forgive me when I'm proud and boastful and do dumb things. Create in me a heart and a mind that pleases You.

In Jesus name,
Amen
