Uncut Stones

Tim Savage

"Then build an altar there to the Lord your God, using natural, uncut stones. You must not shape the stones with an iron tool. Build the altar of uncut stones, and use it to offer burnt offerings to the Lord your God." (Deuteronomy 27:5-6)
I have, for years, read about the altars made with uncut stones and I never gave it a second thought. In the back of my mind a thought tickled, "Why natural, uncut stone, instead of perfectly chiseled rock to form an orderly and finished looking altar.

Today, for some reason, God provided a glimpse, a small revelation. Natural stones are the work of God's hand, perfect in their own form. It's not the work of man, carved in to what might become an idol or graven image. God's gifts are perfect and pure, even if we sometimes look at them first as mis-shaped, unattractive or unusable.

This week, my team and I have been shooting a short dramatic film as an illustration for an upcoming service. It's an awesome opportunity to work on a very creative project that, I'm sure will help to plant seeds for Christ. And while we were an enthusiastic and excited bunch, we had just a few days to prepare what normally would take an experienced film production company weeks to do.

There's something about being in a place of pure surrender to God - this was just that place, as we would literally need Him to provide miracles in order to produce anything at all, much less something of lasting quality and value. God provided in so many overwhelming ways, the crew started referring to the shoot as the "Miracle Film." God orchestrated a divine meeting between me and Jayson Kalani, the guy that would end up playing the lead role, just one day before we had to make a final decision on casting - that's a story in and of itself that I hope to share some time!

The lead actress, May Porter, was another of God's gifts. She was over a half an hour late and we were about ready to close the doors and choose from the many terrific actresses that had already shown up, but just in the nick of time, she came in to deliver a very moving audition and seemed perfect for the part. Both of these fine actors are based out of Hollywood where they are pursuing full-time acting careers - not bad for a church production!

God continued to bless the production with the gift of miracle locations. Again, what should of taken a minimum of three weeks, God provided almost overnight. Our nightclub, gym and home almost just dropped in to our laps and they were perfect. The same was true of our crew, equipment and the weather.

And while we have a lot of work to go, we know that God goes before us and if we are faithful to Him, He will create something that will bring Him honor and glory.
God's gift are perfect and pure without man's hands chiseling and carving them to suit us. Sometimes I will be given a gift that may not look good or feel good to me, but it is still a gift from God that will be for my benefit. He is a God of miracles.
Dear Heavenly Father,
May I be open to Your perfect will. Please shape me and mold me as You would like me to be, not as I want to be. Thank You for the miracles that You have already provided, may Your hand stay firmly on this film in the future.

In Jesus name,
