Everything is Meaningless?

Tim Savage

"For the wise and the foolish both die. The wise will not be remembered any longer than the fool. In the days to come, both will be forgotten. So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless-like chasing the wind." (Ecclesiastes 2:16-17)
Ecclesiastes is different, it was written by King Solomon later in his life after he started to drift away from God. As it's part of the Bible, there are truths and lessons to be learned, but it's important that we keep the context in mind as we study it.

It seems Solomon pursued wisdom, knowledge, pleasure and hard work with the goal of reaching a higher level of understanding of the human condition, longer life and his own glory. He said that, for all of his achievement, he was no better off than anyone else. It occurred to me that it was his goal that was wrong, not the pursuit of things like wisdom, knowledge and hard work.

In fact, if we pursue these things with the intention of using them for God's glory and His purposes then they are extremely valuable and necessary. I think somewhere along the way, after all of the spoils that came with so much power and wealth, Solomon stopped giving God the glory and worshiped himself.
So as I read Ecclesiastes I remind myself that, while Solomon's ideas have truth, they are not necessarily true for me, they are the lessons of someone walking in the wrong direction, searching for the wrong treasure. The lessons are helpful more as a warning of what could happen when Jesus Christ isn't my goal, my treasure. If our goal is to reach others, we'll need God's blessings of wisdom and knowledge and we'll want to work hard, because we'll have a goal worthy of our very best.
Dear Heavenly Father,

Help me to avoid the experience of Solomon. I want to come to the end of my life, not empty and bitter, but content in the peace that I have served You well here on earth. I want to steward Your gifts well and use them for Your kingdom.

In Jesus name,
