Grumbling While Serving God

Richard Waialeale

"The workers who were hired about the eleventh hour came and each received a denarius. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:9-11, 26-28)
These two stories about working in the business sector and serving in God's Kingdom, shows me how we can be influenced by the worlds view of the value of work. It's through these scriptures that Jesus shows me how I can be selfish and work only as hard by what I'll get paid. Where as when we serve in church, it should reflect our love to be in God's Kingdom and would want to do whatever is needed to accomplish His works. But that is not always the case. Often, even in the church, we can loose focus on serving and become positional. Grumbling starts when we see me-me and unfairness in the eyes of this world. But in the Kingdom of Heaven, it doesn't matter because we are all aiming for the same goal and purpose. What I believe Jesus was saying here in todays reading is we should be grateful and not resentful for being able to serve God.
The lesson for today is, it's one persons vision that will lead the church. Once I commit to that vision and agree in the direction the church is headed, then I need to focus on Jesus and poor out my life in serving Him, meaning Jesus. Once I can set my sights on Jesus, then those that are closest around me who also agree will need to be directed and lead in the same fashion. I shouldn't matter how much denarius anyone of us will make, only the fact that we GET to be a part of serving in God's Kingdom to save lives and win souls over to Jesus. Avoid the grumbling mentality and bickering spirit.
Lord I pray for the salvation of those that will be placed in front of me. May they see the likeness of Jesus and give their lives over to You. I pray Lord that I can reflect only You in serving You with all my heart. Amen.
