Amazing Obedience

John Tilton

"Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you." "Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand what he was saying to them. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men." (Luke 2:47-52)
As I read this passage of scriptures, like the people who heard Jesus speak, I too am amazed. However, not only am I amazed with Jesus anointing of wisdom, but with his obedience. Here He is at 12 years old and heeds the call of His heavenly Father to stay back in Jerusalem in His Father's House doing the will of the Father. Now, at the age of 12 years, it is not something a boy of that age would normally do. What amazes me though is Jesus obedience to His parents when they directed Him to go with them, He knowing that they didn't understand the call of the Father. Thus, rather then disobey them he obeyed. Notice the next sentence starts with the word "And," to note that the two sentences are tied together. Thus, because He was obedient, He grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
These scripture sure speak to my heart about times that I may not understand a situation entirely, or my leader(s) may not understand the situation I may be privy to in terms of information and understanding. However, if I am asked to follow those that God put in authority over me, then I must be obedient and love them in their authority and trust God. Simply put, I need to always heed authority with respect and understanding being willing to follow directives or instructions, and trust in God when I do not have a clear understanding or agree with what I am being asked to do.
Lord, thank you for teaching me about obedience and trusting in you. I know that I am used to figuring things out on my own as I have usually done in the past. I know that I am used to giving directives and orders. However you have put me in a position that I need to be open to receiving and carrying out instructions and directives in order to further my work and your ministry. Thus, Lord, please give me discernment as to when to pushback, but more importantly when to trust and do what I am asked for the Kingdom.
