Trading Truth for a Lie

Tim Savage

"They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise!" (Romans 1:25)
Here in Romans Paul is specifically talking about some extreme behaviors of people that have turned their back on God (29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful.), but I wonder if I might be guilty of a similar offense. Money, success, power, influence, material goods - do I worship anything created more than I do God? Am I deceived and blind to some things in my life?

I hope not, but then again, I might not know, if I'm deceived. I think about the hateful and hurtful way that the Westboro group screams and raves, I think about the terrible damage that they inflict on Christianity and other believers, but I can't help but think that they started with a seed of truth, but fell off of the edge because of extreme, radical legalism. Who is deceived? Them or us? While it's easy for us to see truth in this case, it's not always so easy in real life.
Do I tolerate or justify some things because of contemporary society. There are many things tolerated today that weren't 20 years ago. Are those things wrong? Are we deceived, liberal or overly tolerant? Questions of judgment and relativity are rarely easy, but I'm reminded by this passage that I can't let the world set my standards or be my ruler to measure against. I have to stay true to God's intentions and will and can't trade the truth for a lie.

I think this change can be subtle and sometimes we can unconsciously and unknowingly choose unwisely, so we have to stay in His word, relentlessly pursuing His truth, studying and thinking deeply on His lessons.
Dear Heavenly Father,
Grant me wisdom in the gray areas of life, show me Your ways so that I don't make poor choices or decisions. Help me to live my life based on Your standards and not those of the world. Help me to see through deception so that I may walk closer to You and represent You well.

In Jesus name,
