Pono - Fair & Just

John Tilton

Scripture
"You shall not have in your house differing measures, a large and a small. You shall have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure, that your days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord you God is giving you." (Deuteronomy 25:14-16)
Observation
One's house pertains to one's matters, be it their personal, family or business. God is prompting the Israelites to be fair and just in how they reason and judge matters both in their personal life, their family and business. If they are fair and just in their heart, they will be fair and just as they deal with others, thus, minimizing conflict and prolonging a quality of life and health.
Application
The Hawaiians have a word "pono," which means that all is right and good, that all is fair and just. It is a state where relationships are good and any challenges have been resolved in a just and fair manner resulting in all parties being satisfied in their heart that all is right. God calls us to do and be the same in our life with our family, our relationships and business facilitated by our ability to think, reason and act with a heart of fairness. Yes, the key is that in our heart we are looking for an outcome that is fair and just, and not one that is self-centered or based on entitlement.

Often when we are influenced by self-promotion, self-centeredness or entitlement, it causes us to say and do things that often times are not pono, and thus, bring hurt and ill feelings possibly causing consternation and viruses of the heart. Long time relationships can be affected and damaged, requiring major surgery by God.

Thus, God encourages us to have our house our heart, soul and mind in a place that is focused on what is fair and just to others. It may even mean sacrificing our desires and needs, humbling ourselves, eating our pride and suffering for the larger things of God. It is thinking of others first and putting others before ourselves. As the word states, it should be in both small and large matters.

The opposite of going forth with a fair and just pono heart, is favoritism, being hypocritical, saying and doing things that have no rhyme or reason but prompted by self.
It is using a different scale for each situation.
Prayer
Lord, may I be careful to keep my house in order, to keep my heart pono, prompted by a desire to be fair and just to others. May I use scales and measure that have others' well being in mind. When I feel or experience on the other hand where the scales have been turned against me, may I find the strength and humility to endure the hurt or unfairness to be the example of who you want me to be. May you instead show be how to remedy and turn the situation positive, hopefully ministering to those who offend me.
