Not Just Idle Words

March 17 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

“They are not just idle words for you - they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.” Deuteronomy 32:47
Moses reprimands the Israelites one last time before they cross the river Jordan to possess Canaan, the promised land. Since he will not be with them, he recited words of reminders not just to the present generation of Joshua but also for the future generations to obey God. This obedience promises blessings and long life.
The promises of blessings sounds melodious, until we hear the conditions they require. As Moses tells Joshua that these words are not meaningless they are life giving, I am reminded of my own choices that has brought me death. Perhaps it is not in the physical death that I’ve stopped breathing, but I saw how I died in the different areas of my life when I did not obey God. Take my relationships, for example. I fell in love with the wrong people, and have either hurt them or they’ve hurt me. God, in His kindness, brought my broken heart back to wholeness and had to breath on it to heal. I died in stewardship, when I irresponsibly used my resources. The consequences of my choices would not have been so difficult if I had been accountable. I died in my spiritual walk when I failed to spend time in the Word, and this is while I professed faith in God! Unbelief set in and I started to question His plans. These little deaths kept me from getting to the place of maturity and spiritual prosperity. In the same chapter, verse 36, it says “The Lord will judge His people and have compassion on his servants when he sees their strength is gone.” I could have been spared from the heartaches of my disobedience if I had just obeyed to begin with. Thankfully, we have a compassionate Lord who brings us back to fruitful life.
Please spare us from our own choices that will only lead to death. Your words, Lord, are truly our life. Help us be mindful to always have you first, because we want to LIVE!
