Act on What You Hear

July 17 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Scripture
ďDonít fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and donít act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are what they look like. But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God- the free life!- even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action.Ē (James 1:22-25)
Observation
Many times distraction can be a cause of major downfall. People routinely go to church listen to an awesome sermon, but forget it the minute they get home because they were thinking about some sort of hindrance. A word from God that could have been used in their life, passed before them because they were not paying attention. The keyword to this whole passage is action. God admires a man or woman of action. What use is someone who goes to hours and hours of teachings and seminars, who store all the most important information in the world in their brains, but never use it.
Application
Ouch, this verse was like a slap in the face. I like to think I am a good listener, I like it when my friends come to me to vent or have me just be the person to listen to. But I find it that when I am in a situation where I donít particularly feel like listening, am tired, or just being selfish, I end up not really caring or truly paying attention to my friend. This also happens with the Word of God. I love going to church, I really do, and I love the sermons especially from certain pastors, but sometimes I admit I get distracted. The words pouring from the pastorsí souls are incredible, sometimes you can just tell that the things they reveal are solely from God to his people. I know that God wants me to instead of just listening and admiring the amazing revelations, that I have to apply it to my life. I canít just sit there sundays and clap when its appropriate, or laugh when its funny. I have to soak the words in and use them in everyday life. I don't want to miss a thing God says.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for my scatterbrain mind. I know that sometimes I deliberately choose not to listen, and Iím so sorry for that. Lord cleanse my heart from all sin, I want to be pure for you so that when you have a word for me I hear it, and go with it full throttle!
