1 Cor 15:32-34 (NASB)
32If from human motives I fought with wild beasts at Ephesus, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, LET US EAT AND DRINK, FOR TOMORROW WE DIE.
33Do not be deceived: "Bad company corrupts good morals."
34Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God I speak this to your shame.
So how does Paul get to say such harsh words to a church and for them to receive it, as well as it becoming a word of conviction to us even today. The answer is relationship and truth. When we build relationship in deep and meaningful ways, we are able to speak Godís truth into peopleís lives. In this case, Paul uses sarcasm, to say if there is no resurrection of the dead then letís just live for ourselves today, for there is nothing else after this life. And then he splits them right between the eyes with a sharp stone and stays, stop being deceived by hanging around bad people with misguided thoughts, because their thoughts will corrupt you. That is the story of the Israelites even as they took the promised land, they did not rid themselves completely of all its previous inhabitants as God had directed, and as a result they would fall away from God and begin worshiping false gods of the previous inhabitants of the land.
I am to know for myself the surety of my salvation, comes through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. And that my salvation is assured, in that when He returns I will die to my natural body completely, and be raised in eternal life. I am to live a life with that perspective in mind. In order that I may not lose that perspective I need to rid myself of bad company, because eventually it will corrupt me, I simply am not strong enough on my own to resist that. So the Lord is telling me to be sober minded, repent for my sins, and remove those in my midst that are not pressing toward God but drawing me away from Him and His ways.
Dear heavenly Father thank you for todayís lesson, it is a powerful testimony to my heart, and confirmation of what I need to do. Partnering with you in life is one of the most freeing things I know, in that your ways are better than my ways, and your burden is lighter than the burden I would choose to carry for myself. I thank you Lord so much for allowing me to partner with the Holy Spirit in me, to accomplish your good works in this life, and to have the amazing promise of the life to come.
