God Does It All

January 31 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Exodus 20: 18-20. During all this time, the people in the valley heard the thundering and saw the lightning on the mountain. They saw smoke rising from the mountain and heard the sound of the trumpet. They were afraid and shook with fear. They stood away from the mountain and watched. Then the people said to Moses, ďIf you want to speak to us, then we will listen. But please donít let God speak to us. If this happens, we will die.Ē Then Moses said to them, ďDonít be afraid! God has come to test you. He wants you to respect him so that you will not sin.Ē

God shows up on earth on top of a mountain called Mt. Sinai or Mt. Horeb, located near St Catherine, Egypt on the Sinai Peninsula. The mountainís height elevation stands at 7,497 feet, for it was a tremendous hike for Moses to climb to meet God. Yet the bellowing trumpet sounds from heaven heralds the coming of God our Father and the fire encased in immense smoke that consumed Mt Horeb, perhaps a symbolic action of sterility, in order for God (purely holy) to occupy space, because of the worldís sinful condition, and primarily to establish a designated space for God to meet man by assignment.

I could only imagine the extreme fear Godís people experienced as they witnessed hearing Godís thunderous voice, the trumpets that blares sounds from heaven, the smoke and fire that consumed Mt. Horeb as God gains entry to meet Moses. I also could imagine great conviction found on the hearts of the people as if every sin were revealed by the mere presence of our God that stands in the midst of them. Perhaps that same intensity of reverence can be experienced in our daily devotional time. No doubt, we can experience Godís powerful presences that reveals sin if there is any and regain an intimate relationship with God whose entire being is pure unadulterated love.
Lord. Thank you for revealing yourself to Moses and your people. Your written accounts of Mt Horeb event speaks well for all who live in the present age that they can experience your awesome power by faith and love through the workings of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
