A Discerning Heart

May 18 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Scripture
4 The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." 6 Solomon answered, "You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. 7 "Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. 9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?" 10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 11 So God said to him, "Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, 12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both riches and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. 14 And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life." 15 Then Solomon awoke—and he realized it had been a dream. 1 Kings 3:4-15
Observation
God goes to Solomon and asks him what ever he asks for he can have. Most normal people would have asked for things that would make there life easier. A job with no stress, kids that know how to share, and a wife that knew how to cook. Oh yeah and a ton of money to buy happiness. A lighter load is always a big seller. I would think common sense would be pretty high but not for themselves but for others. The perfect wife, the perfect kids, and the perfect life. Who could ask for anything more? King Solomon asked for a discerning heart to govern the Lords people and to distinguish between right and wrong. King Solomon knew of Gods plans to have him rule over these people. He asked the Lord to help him fulfill Gods plan in his life. I know for myself finding Gods plan in our life is not as easy as Solomon revealed it to be. Some of us go thru our whole life figuring out just the thing that God created us to do. In the mean while I will love my Lord with all my heart, mind, spirit, and strength. And love my neighbors starting with my wife and kids just as I love myself. What King Solomon actually asked for goes beyond what the Lord commands of us. This is to love others even more then you love yourself. The greatest gift is of sacrifice. Jesus Christ died on the cross so that we would be saved from our sins and receive eternal life. To be Christ –like is to serve others. A friend once told me that his hearts desire is to be a servant of all. His goal was to out serve everyone including is wife. For he who is last will be put first. I have found that when ever I do something that I would benefit from it always either damages relationships or hurts a love one.
Application
I know that I need to continue to die to myself. My own needs, desires, and wants that would inhibit me from seeing God’s perfect plans for my life. I need to focus on other peoples needs for it is in serving their needs I will gain spiritual maturity. I will continually strengthen my compassion for others which needs to be stronger than the love I have for myself.
Prayer
I pray Lord that you search my heart. Please clean my heart of everything that is not of you Lord. Scrub me of my self desires for myself and for others. Help me to desire the things you desire. Help me to desire your ways Lord. Change me thru your grace and mercy to have a heart more like you Lord. Please Lord give me a discerning heart like Solomon Lord so that I may know the difference between right and wrong. To be able to steward my wife, kids, and all the people that you have given me influence with in your ways Lord. Please continue to stretch and tug at my heart to grow my heart to compassionately love unconditionally Lord. I love you Lord and thank you for loving me. Amen
