“See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the traditions of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather then according to Christ.”
The church at Colosse had a mixed population of Jews and Gentiles, bringing together wrong ideas and eventually false doctrine. Writing from a prison in Rome, Paul writes this letter, warning the church against the heresy it faced.
Warning! False teachers and vain philosophy among us! Evidently, somethings have not changed since the time of Paul. We to must heed Paul’s warning of heresy, lest we find ourselves taken captive or robbed of truth, salvation and blessings. As Christians, it is our job and duty to KNOW God and His word. We must be able to give a reason for why we believe and confidently live it out in faith. If we cannot live it out day by day, then something is wrong. Most of the time people find excuses to justify the way they believe. Instead of searching the scriptures for truth, their lives produce an abundance of bad fruit; fear, worry, doubt, and unbelief, living to please self (or others) rather then God, and justifying all kinds of sins, they title as weaknesses.
Just as Paul spoke the truth in love, not in fear of what man would think, we to must take a loving stand for truth. It is our duty before a loving God to represent Him well. Otherwise, we may find that empty deceit and worldly ways of thinking have become to us a way of life. I have found the road diffidcult at times, emotional to say the least. To speak truth in love is one things, to defend the faith can be quite another. In our defense of truth we must be able to recognize the strongholds in the minds of men and women. The Apostle Paul talks about the weapons he used being, not carnal, (for the flesh) but for the tearing down of strongholds; strong ways of thinking people hold on to. So on we go, standing strong in His might, warring not for the flesh, but for the hearts and minds of men, remembering we are not alone.
Your word is everlasting. It doesn’t change and will remain when all else falls short. I ask that you make my heart receptive to your truth, no matter the cost. For what does it profit, to gain the world’s way of living and end up losing ones very soul? Stir up in me those things that don’t please you and from that point of repentance, I will be free to walk in your ways and to know your heart. Give your people the courage to trust you and to speak the truth in love. No matter the cost. I am so blessed to know you and I rejoice in what is coming!
