Give, when, so, then, be

May 30 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

May the LORD give you discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the LORD your God. Then you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the LORD gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. (1 Chronicles 22:12-13)
Just about every day on my way to work I pray. One of the things I pray for is discretion; I also pray for understanding. Discretion is keeping a reign on our tongues. Saying things with integrity. Not getting caught up in gossip. Knowing when to say things and how to say them. Understanding is putting legs on knowledge. Understanding is knowing Ďhow toí do things. It is a comprehension with practical outcomes.

These things are given by God. And they were part of the prayer and blessing of David to his son, Solomon.

Discretion and understanding are important traits of leaders, especially Godís leaders. The reason God grants his leaders discretion and understanding is for the purpose of keeping His laws in our hearts, and practicing them in our lives. Every day.

David went on to say that Solomon would have success if he observed Godís commands. And he encouraged Solomon to be strong and courageous, not afraid or discouraged.
These are important points for leaders. God gives the discretion and understanding. He gives us these things when he places his leaders in positions of leadership. He gives so that we may keep his law, and be led by his Spirit. Then we will have success when we follow Godís plan, decrees and laws. And as leaders, we will always have opposition. That is why we are to be strong and courageous.
LORD, thank you for the gifts you give us, including discretion and understanding. May we use these gifts to do the important work you have given us, as your leaders, your ambassadors here on earth. May our lives be characterized by our devotion to You, obedience to your commands and success that comes from your blessing on our lives. May we be strong and courageous, because You are with us. Amen.
