“They came to a place named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, sit here until I have prayed.”
On a slope of the mountain in a lonley garden, Jesus took his friends one last time. I hear it was filled with olive trees at the time of Christ. (still today perhapes, and I hope to find out soon) Jesus asked His disciples to watch and pray while He spends time alone in prayer with His Father. His disciples do their best, but can’t seem to keep their eyes open. He returns to find them sleeping and awakens them with a message. “Could you not keep watch for one hour? Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.”Jesus was simply asking them to allow their spirit to lead them and to keep them alert, discerning the spiritual warefare going on around them.
The name Gethsemane means oil press. To extract the oil from the fruit of the olive, one would need an olive press for the task. I read that the process for extracting the oil begins by first picking the olive and brusing and crushing the fruit. The broken fruit is then gathered and placed in baskets, stacked one upon the other. From there the fruit is place under tremendous pressure, firm and steady, increasing over time until the red stained oil contained therein is extracted from the once unblemished fruit. Its not hard to see the similarities in what began that night in the garden of Gethsemane, with our Lord.
Isn’t it interesting that the baskets of broken and brused olives are stacked one upon another...
The garden of Gethsemane is a place of brokeness and sorrow. Its where each of us must go as we lay down our own will before God, emptying out our basket of dreams and desires. It can be excruciating. Until, the darkness clears and the light of a new day begins, revealing the remains of your dreams in a pile under the light. Now with eyes to see you begin to recongize them for what they truly are. Ashes... nothing more. The best part of your journey begins now. As you take your first step into the empty basket, you realize a new freedom you have never know before. A freedom to give your life away. As your basket is placed in stack on top of those gone before you, a smile takes its place on your face radiating from your spirit. At that moment, you know for sure, those dreams and desires you gave Him, will never be missed.
As we lay down our life for Him we will find it!
