In My Own Eyes

April 3 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Judges 17:6
In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.
Israel was forgetting the Lord and His commandments, and the people did whatever they wanted.
First Micah steals a lot of money from his mom, at least he eventually gives it back. Then his mom expresses her gratitude to God by breaking a commandment and making an idol. Micah sets up his own place of worship, again doing the wrong thing in Godís eyes. Then he hires a priest and treats him like a son. The priest then sells him out when offered a more prestigious job. The people of Dan steal the contraband idols and then sets them up to worship them.
The whole scene is full of rebellion, lawlessness, and people doing bad things. This chaos comes about because there is no king, no leader, upholding Godís ways and the people are selfishly doing whatever they want.
I need to look at my own life for ways that I am ďdoing my own thingĒ contrary to Godís ways.
Am I worshiping idols, maybe not a silver statue, but what about seeking after money, or position, or possessions?
An idol is anything that I give my attention and affection to. Is it a celebrity? A boyfriend? Making money? What is it that takes my attention and affection away from God, and His ways?
I need to think about that. I surely spend more time on the computer than in the Bible. Is the computer an idol for me?
If Iím not worshiping idols, am I doing what seems right in my own eyes rather than following Godís way? Do I cut corners? Tell little, or big, lies? Cheat on my taxes? Am I always thinking of myself and what I want, or do I put otherís needs and feelings first?

I often sing worship songs that say ďJesus You are my King.Ē If I can truly live that way, with Jesus as my king, then I wonít fall into the trap that Micah, the Danites, and all of Israel did... doing what seems right in my own eyes. Keeping Jesus as King in my life and His Word as my guide, will keep me from being deceived into thinking my way is right. Itís Godís way thatís right!
Lord Jesus , I thank You for being my King! You have given me all that I need to live a good life! I thank You for Your word that shows me whatís true, and for the Holy Spirit that teaches me Your ways and gives me strength to live it out.
Lord show me if I have made anything an idol in my life, or I am ďdoing what is right in my own eyes.Ē I will worship You alone! Amen.
