A Family Tree

December 21 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

"A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit."
Isaiah 11:1 (NIV)
Have you ever wondered about your family's ancestry? Most people begin to research rather late in life long after many family members and relatives are deceased. The Scripture records the lineage of Jesus in the gospels of Matthew and Luke but many people find those passages uninteresting having little or no meaning for Christians today.
All Scripture is given for our inspiration including the genealogy of Jesus. It establishes the fact that He is of the royal line of David and legitimate heir to the throne. In 2 Samuel 7:16 God made a covenant with David that His kingdom would be everlasting - a Kingdom only God can accomplish! We can be assured that Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promise and our faith is rooted and grounded in truth.
As indicated by the prophecy in Isaiah 11, at the time of Christ's birth, Israel no longer belonged to a King. Like David's father Jesse, Jesus was born in poverty. Nevertheless, we can be sure God's Word will never fail. Jesus is the Branch that brings us peace. He is the future hope of Israel and the Desire of All Nations (Haggai 2:7). He is the Root and Offspring of David (Revelation 22:16) - our Savior and our king.
Father, we thank you for the fulfillment of your Word as we prepare to celebrate the birth of your Son, Jesus. Fill us with your Spirit that we may grow in the grace and knowlege of Him in whom all blessings flow. Amen.
