It Takes a Heart to Reach a Heart

April 18 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

1 Samuel 18: 1 “Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul”.

The word is out, Israel has won! The champion Goliath is dead. As David enters Jerusalem with the head of Goliath in hand, his fame goes before him and reaches king Saul and his son Jonathan. The king has asked “Whose son is this young man”? David now speaking for himself answers “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite”. Jonathan, who is standing by glued to every word that David speaks is suddenly overcome with a love for David that defies understanding.

What was it that caused Jonathan’s heart to be knit to David’s in this way? The word doesn’t give us that detail. However, as we read though this time in David’s life we can begin to see why God knit these two together. God Knew that a trusted friend would be just what David was going to need.
There have been times in my life that God carried me though a tough situation by the hand of a dear friend. He sees around every corner and He knows just what we’ll need. The people He brings in our life are there for a reason. If we will see them as such, (the good and the not so good) our hearts will be conformed to God’s, and we'll begin to see them as He sees them. At other times we find ourselves facing our Goliath’s alone. I have discovered its in those times that His presence comes as a trusted friend. He stands beside me, draws me close and takes my hand. If we will allow Him to lead us during the times we feel alone. We will find our heart being knit to His in such a way we never dreamed possible, and the outcome? We are changed! His very presence changes us, no not from removing the problem necessarily. Walking through it we learn to trust Him. Walking with Him we learn who He IS.
Father, thank you for knowing the times I need a close friend to lean on or just to talk to. May I treasure each friendship and never take for granted the people you bring in my life. And in those times when it is you that arrives at my side, may my heart be knit with yours quickly, so that I do not miss even a moment of your presence.
I love you, Gail
