Purity Matters

November 17 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Scripture
Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. (2 Corinthians 7:1)
Observation
Believers are encouraged to make a clean break with the things of their past. This is not about religion but instead about relationship. Anything from our previous life that gets in the way of our ability to please, honor and represent the God who has saved us, should be removed from our lives. It is important to note the author’s intent of focusing the weight of this issue is squarely on the personal shoulders of those who have willfully chosen to become Christ followers. It is up to each of us to recognize the things that are contaminating our lives, seek to repent of them and resist their influence and attraction. (see verses 9-11; Romans 8:12-13 and Galatians 5:16)
Application
The other day I was speaking with someone who is working to lose weight. This Christ follower shared how, for them, McDonald’s was getting in the way of their ability to reflect a God of order because their own appearance was one whose life represented no order at all. This person is losing weight, working out and shaping up so that their physical appearance matches their inward belief.

It is so tempting to only allow the focus of our attention to be on the “big sins” and miss the ones that we compromise on that are just as effective at contaminating our lives. What is an area of your life that is getting in the way of your message? What is causing you from not achieving the best God has for you? Those are the places to begin.
Prayer
Thank you for reminding me that it is my responsibility to present myself to you daily for inspection – not as a point of fear but understanding that it is your desire that I be a great reflection of you to others in my life. Help me to notice the smudges on the mirror – the minor imperfections that alter your reflection to others. Give me the strength, courage and faith to deal with the issues that you bring to my attention. My desire is to please you and I am thankful that your desire is for me to experience the best that you have to give.
