“ So Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses on account of their despondency and cruel bondage.” Ex. 6: 9

Someone once coined the phase, “Its darkest before the dawn,” and that couldn’t be more true then in the Exodus story. Moses sets out to deliver a Good word to God’s people, and proclaim a message to Pharaoh “Let my people go.” Instead of deliverance things go from bad to worse, the people are laden down with even MORE work, causing feelings of hopelessness, discouragement, gloom and doom. So disheartened were the people of God, they did not even take notice when the good news came...

Its a tough place to be when you preach a good word and no one takes notice. On the other hand, its a tough place to be when a good word comes and your so weighted down you can’t even hear it. What’s a man of God to do? Well in Moses case, he complains to God. But this story really isn’t about Moses, is it? Its not even about the suffering of God’s people. This story is all about God! And when we read it in the light of WHO God is, it opens up a whole new world, for both the people of God, then and now.

I love God’s response to our complaining hero, (6:1) Now move over Moses and watch what I will do! God wasn’t worried one bit about all the trouble His Word stirred up, as a matter of fact, He planned to stir up the dust. God knew of the state of mind His people were in, it says, He heard their cries. He was coming NOT as a comforter, but a deliverer!

God’s word comes to us today, much the same way it came to the people of Egypt, while we were yet in our sin, Christ died. A word from God will always stir up the dust in our life. The very essence of God’s word spoken to our heart, whether it be a rebuke, an exhortation, a word of encouragement, or a wonderful future promise, is meant to cause change. Sometimes we need to be reminded of whose really in control, not Pharaoh, not our circumstances, not even our sufferings, but God alone has the power to influence or direct peoples behavior or the course of events, as He wills. What amazes me the most is that, He allows US to come along for the ride, to stand beside Him and watch what He will do. Its our calling today as it was the call of Moses, to get to know the Great I AM. The better we know Him the better off we will be!

Thank you for revealing yourself through the powerful acts of deliverance in my life. You have become so much more then a name to me, You Are My Deliverer, My Redeemer, My Lord! Your Promises to me have caused such a change to take place inside of my heart that I have No reason to go back to Egypt. For Egypt is a burial ground of despondency and cruel bondage, a place of death. Reveal to each of us the meaning of your name, and through a demonstration of your faithfulness we will cross over to the promise land.
