“As for the foreigners who do not belong to your people Israel but have come from a distant land because of your name- for they will hear of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm-when they come and pray toward this temple, then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigners ask of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.” 1 Kings 8: 41-43
How great is Solomon’s heart? The apple doesn’t fall that far from the tree. How humble, gracious and sincere he is, he “stood before the altar of the Lord in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward the heavens-”( 1 Kings 8: 22) I can just imagine him, kneeled, arms outstretched, eyes close, head towards the heaven as if it was just the Lord and him, proclaiming the temple to the Lord. His heart truly shines, he wholeheartedly wants the whole world to hear of the Lord’s name. From his own people, to foreigners all over the world, Solomon declares his love for the Lord through the building of the temple; this is a historic moment of epic proportions! Solomon has no idea the foreshadowing the temple will have in our future, but even if he did, his true motives seem to be honest and genuine, purposely as a declaration of his love towards God and so that his people and others around the world have a safe place to worship.
Given the chance to build a monument to God that will affect years of generations later on, would I do it as graciously and sincere as Solomon. I would like to think the answer would be yes. Of course Solomon really had no idea that his temple would be the pivotal piece that marks the beginning of the end of all humankind. But I truly believe he meant everything he did purely for God and no other reason. Coming to know myself these eighteen years, I realize Pride is a major fault I mastered, already... yikes. But reading about Solomon’s heart and love for God. How humble he was to stand in front of the whole assembly of Israel and profess his love for God, inspires me and really makes me want to be like him. He had such a childlike manner, no humiliation, no shame. Exactly how I should live my life around others, around friends, around my family.
Lord, I love you. You are everything to me. WIthout you my life has no purpose. I want to declare that to the whole world just as Solomon does. I want my life to be a dedication so that in some way I can build you my own temple, my own proclamation of love. Lord, guide me in your ways, give me your strength. I love you with my life.
