Look In The Mirror

July 23 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does. James 1:22-25
Paul is writing to James about not just listening to God's word, but to do what it says. Paul knew the importance of doing what God's word says, and not just hearing it. Paul relates it to someone looking in the mirror and just walking away, forgetting what he/she looks like. And how the person thinks that he/she does not need to change. Paul wanted God's word to affect James in a way where it brought transformation in his life. That listening to God's word is not enough, but doing what it says brings change. Paul wanted James to loom in the mirror to see if he liked what he saw, and if not; it was time for a change in James life. Paul knew if the word of God was active in James life, he will be changed into God's image. James needed God's word to be alive in his life.
When I look in the mirror, what do I see? Do I like what I see? If I don't like what I see, it is God saying to me "time to change!!" And I have to make God's word alive and active in my life. I have to do what God's word says and make it active in my life. God's word needs to affecting me in a way where it makes me want to change and is changing me into a man of God. When the word of God is not alive and active in me, my spiritual walk will become dead and flat, my relationship with God will become cold. If I want to change, then God's word has to affect me to change. I need to be in God's word daily and choosing to obey it. If I want to get closer and deeper in God, then God's word has to make me want to change. And looking in the mirror everyday is a barometer to see if the word of God is changing me.
Heavenly Father thank you for your word. I ask you to help me to want to change, use your word to change me. I want to be closer to you and deeper in you. Make in a man of God that you want me to be. In Jesus name. Amen.
