Can We Stay Awhile?

April 30 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Matt. 17:4 “Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters, one for you, one for Moses and Elijah.”

“Peter, please tells us what was really going on in your mind”? Was it one of those impulsive moments? Say anything when you don’t know what to do or say? I’ve done it! Maybe that’s all it was? Or maybe not. Have you ever had a moment in worship when you thought “I don’t want this to end, I want to stay right here for awhile”. Those are the times we treasure. Those are the times we never forget. I believe this was one of those moments. Peter had been with Jesus from the start of his ministry, he saw the lame walk, the deaf hear, and blind see. He even walked on water for a minute or two. This time was different. Peter, had walked with Christ for three years, he was now "experiencing Christ" in such a way that he didn’t want it to end.

As Jesus takes the three disciples up the mountain they must of wondered why up here? Where are the people? As Peter watched Jesus transfigure before them something happened. Peter could see! He could see into the spiritual realm and right before his eyes, he saw Moses and Elijah speaking with Jesus. If that wasn’t enough, a cloud descends and without any effort of his own his ears open to a heavenly voice declaring, “This is my Son whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” Now let me ask you, would you want to leave and go back down the mountain where they want to kill your Lord?

I believe there is a place in each of our hearts that we can go to as christians. A place where Christ residents in us, where He is Lord. The psalms talk about abiding under the shadow of His wings. In the secret place I find refuge. For me it's in my devotions, my worship, and through prayer that my soul makes that connection. Its in the times of waiting silently before Him that I enter into His presence and I am transformed. My eyes and ears are open and I see Him more clearly for who He is. My heart cries out, "Lord it is so good for us to be here, can we stay awhile?"
Dear Jesus, thank you for making your home inside of us. Where we can go and find you there. Show us the way to the secret place of your presence. Where we begin to look more and more like you. A place where we find strength for the journey.
