Task and Purpose

October 11 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Luke 24: 32 and 44
32They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?"
44He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms."
Even after being with Jesus for three years, those apostles heading for Emmaus did not understand the task and purpose of why Jesus came in the flesh. Every time I read this passage, I feel an urge to be dismayed at these men but always stop short because my heart is also convicted. The disciples on the road to Emmaus asked each other, ďwere not our hearts burning . . . [when he] opened the Scriptures to us?Ē I have to shamefully admit that my heart doesnít always burn when I hear the Scripture because of all the distractions, discouragements and worries of the world. The two apostles undoubtedly listened intently but did not experience an epiphany until Jesus broke bread with them. Today, through the Scripture, God plainly tells us the task and purpose of His Son, Jesus, and I need only to open my eyes and ears to listen and allow the Scriptures to burn my heart. Jesus promises that all that is written about him must be fulfilled. This is the hope that I have in Christ that he will come back after he has prepared a place for me in his kingdom.
Today, I will condition my heart so that when I hear the Godís words, I will truly be convicted and rejoice at the same time because of Godís unfailing promise that Jesus saves all. I will purify my heart by filling it with Godís Scripture so as to squeeze out all the impurities that the devil sows.
Father in Heaven, thank you for your Son, Jesus, whose promise is unfailing and sacrifice perfect. Help me today to sustain my heart in a state of purity through your word and remain in you to accomplish all that you have in plan for me. In Christís name I pray.
