Giving Jesus our attention

October 17 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Scripture
Acts 3:5 "And he began to give them his attention, expecting to receive something from them."
Observation
Peter and John were going to the temple when they were stopped by a beggar. This beggar was lame from birth, so the only hope he had was to beg for money from people going in and out of the temple. When the beggar saw Peter and John, he saw them as an income opportunity. Never did he think of the miracle about to happen. The beggar asked for money, and Peter and John both said, 'Look at us!'
Was the beggar not looking at them while begging? Maybe he knew he ahd to hustle in order to make an income, so his attention was on everyone and not on specific people. This beggar just needed to be refocused on what was more important than money.
Application
How many times have a swirl of questions go through my head causing me to get dizzy and frazzled? How often do I hear Jesus tell me things and although I hear His voice, I never really focus in on it? I am not so much different from this beggar at times. I can beg for answers, blurt out questions with feelings of anger, frustrations, and hopelessness. Yet, those questions become overbearingly loud that I do not hear Jesus tell me,'Look at me!'
In the midst of my internal gripe and crying out, I must remember who is my rock and my salvation. When I focus on other things, like money, etc, then those worldly things tend to become like a foundation instead of Jesus. The evidence comes out as selfishness, impatience, etc. Jesus does not want things to be like that. I must not cover my foundation of Christ with over-exaggerated concerns. Rather, I must build something more worthy on His foundation in me like 'loving other better, building family relationships stronger, being more understanding while being pressed, and exhibiting patience through humility more.
First step is always to repent daily. Next step is to re-center Jesus in my actions and thoughts, so I can recognize His voice better. Final step is reconnecting with Jesus through prayer.
Prayer
Dear Father,
I love You. Help me to be more like You as I get chiseled and pruned by Your hands and not by anyone else. Many moments I get frustrated because hundreds of questions want to come out all at the same time. I will refocus my attention back on You, Lord, for You give me hope, wisdom, comfort, and most of all, love. Thank You, Father, please guide and protect my family always.
In Your name, Jesus,
Amen Silas
