We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. I John 2:3-6
ohn is teaching the church about our actions speaking louder than our words. Throughout I John he writes that if we say we love God, but do not obey His word, we are liars. John knows that God will not believe our words, but our actions. John is teaching that when our words is consistant with our behavior, then the word of God is in us and the world will know that we are God's people. It seems that the church is just saying all the right things, to make people believe that they are christians. But God sees the heart and how real the church is. If our life does not match our words, we are only hypocrites and God is not real to us. If we say we know God, but do not obey His word; then our lives will be empty. John is stressing the importance of doing what our words say. Because our life tells the world if we are really God's children.
Am I obeying God's word? I need to realize that my words don't mean anything if I do not back them up with my actions. I will only become a hypocrite: if my actions does not support my words. My behavior, actions, thoughts, emotions, choices should all be consistant with my words, and the word of God. Everything about me should all line up with God's word, so that people around me can know that I belong to God. I have to choose to obey God in my life and not be led of my flesh, but by the Holy Spirit. My life should be an example of God's word. I am choosing to obey God's word in every area of my life.
Jesus, thank you for your word. I ask you to help me to have my life be consistant with your word. Help not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. Help me never to walk in the flesh, but allow the Holy Spirit to lead me. I choose to obey you. In Jesus name. Amen.
