Heresy of Practice

October 11 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Scripture
James 1:22-25 Do not merely listen to the Word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do it is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it - he will be blessed in what he does.
Observation
'Give me Christ but not His followers,' is a comment we often hear. The impression that the world has of us is that Christians more often talk the talk but don't walk the talk. This has discouraged people even to the point of turning down Christ's gift of eternal life. These words in James 1 come as a wake-up call. While we often get our doctrine right, are we as careful to guard against the heresy of practice? The latter is slowly creeping into the christian lifestyle as we become more exposed to the the temptations around us that all too often seem more enticing than dangerous. The believer who has ceased to walk the talk is like salt that has lost its saltiness and light that no longer shines in a dark space and the church that doesn't deal with the heresy of practice is a church that has lost its voice and fallen silent in the crucial hour when it is needed most. Perhaps it's time to reexamine all we have heard. As Christians, we get fed very well in church by all the preaching and teaching, but it is time to get up and exercise and put to good use what we have learnt. The next time you pick your Bible up let it be with the intention to transform and not get through a quick devotion.
Application
When you do your devotions and Bible meditation, ask yourself if there are sins to confess, habits/attitudes to change, any action towards reconciliation to be taken, any prayer need or thanks to be given and then please don't wait - Just do it! Shine again by all means and may the church reclaim her voice in a world that is seeking answers.
Prayer
Dear Lord, i know that it is so easy to hear Your Word and forget it the moment i step out into the challenges of everyday life. Yet, it is in the mundane, in this everyday life that i need to apply Your Word the most. So help me not to forget that i am a walking Bible to those who have never heard the good news. Above all, transform me for i cannot do it on my own. May Your Word divide between the soul and the spirit of my being and set me on my way to becoming more Christ-Like. I lean on You for help and power. In Jesus' Name i pray. Amen.
