Robins and Lilies

January 2 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

"Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these."
Luke 12:27
As I read and study the words of Jesus in Luke 12:22-31, I am amazed at the lessons to be learned from God's creation. Jesus encourages us to trust in His wisdom to provide our physcial needs that we may not become anxious or occupied with the material things of this world as the pagans are. Jesus uses examples in nature to illustrate God's care and compassion for all His creation.
Jesus tells us to consider the ravens and the lilies to help us appreciate His divine providence and unfailing love for all His creatures. Ravens are considered unclean and of no worth in the Old Testamemt book of Leviticus (11:13-20) yet our Heavenly Father provides and cares for them. He has thoroughly and uniquely equipped each of the many different species of birds to secure their food according to their particular kind. We can often hear and enjoy their songs of praise and thanksgiving to their creator. Jesus also tells us to examine the lilies of the field which display God's power and glory as He clothes them in beauty and splendor not even Solomon could boast, yet we are of much more value. We too have been clothed in splendor through the righteousness of Christ, our Lily Of The Valley. If God takes so much care to clothe a simple flower with His intricate marvelous design and if He does not forget the sparrows that are sold for 2 pennies (Luke 12:6-7), how much more will He care for us who are His children created in His image?
While the Psalmist (Psalm 84:3) expresses his intense desire for the living God , the sparrow and the swallow have already found their rest near His altar! Are you yearning for more of God's Spirit in your life? Have you found rest for your soul? To begin this New Year may our hope and faith be renewed as we meditate on the many wonders of Him who created us for His glory.
Lord, fill us to overflowing with your Spirit and open our hearts and minds to a renewed awareness of your Holy presence that we might rest in You. We thank you for the many blessings you have provided. In Jesus' precious Name. Amen.
