Be Yourself

May 23 // 1 Corinthians 8:20-21

Then Saul gave David his own armor-a bronze helmet and a coat of mail. David put it on, strapped the sword over it, and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. "I can't go in these," he protested. "I'm not used to them." So he took them off again. He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them in his shepherd's bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd's staff and sling, he started across to fight Goliath.
- 1 Samuel 17:38-40
How often we do this, we find something that works for someone else so we put it on or this church over here is doing this and so we take up what they're doing and we run with it for awhile only to find that not only does it not fit but it's actually a hindrance to us. Fortunately, David was smarter than that - he realized not only did Saul's armor not fit him but it wasn't made for him and it would have been a hindrance to his victory over Goliath. Likewise, we need to learn to not put on what is not made for us. God is infinitely creative and He has made each of His children with gifts and talents to be used where He places us. David knew what his gifts and talents were and he used them for God's glory. But I believe his greatest gifts that day were trusting God for the victory and being who God made him to be.
I was recently elected to the board of our church and a friend of mine sent me an email that said, "Be yourself." I was a bit puzzled by that at first, but today I find it to be some of the best advice anyone's ever given me.
Father, what awesome gifts and talents You have given me for where You have planted me. Help me to bloom where I'm planted and honor Your creativity and plans for me by being myself - the daughter you have created me to be. I pray for wisdom, guidance and direction as we walk together on this amazing journey. How great is our God!
