"Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean." (Mark 7:14-15)
Jesus statement is so profound in terms of what should take place within our heart when we see and hear things in our daily lives. A metamorphosis should always take place through a transformation and marked change. That metamorphosis is made possible by the best God-given filter ... the heart. But what if the heart is not a heart after God's own heart? Then, a workout of the heart is the remedy. The remedy? A prescription for daily devotions and time with God will put the heart in shape. The beauty of the butterfly is a beautiful metamorphosis example of how a total transformation takes place from the caterpillar. We need to let the same beautiful metamorphosis take place in our hearts so that we move away from being self-centered and self-serving. Then, the things we see, hear and experience will be ingested into our hearts and come forth to touch people, encourage people, meet people's needs; all examples of the heart of Jesus.
Such is the same in my life where I need to remember to past what I see, hear and experience each day through my heart filter so that what I think, say and do will be of God's heart. However, as we read in Genesis, man's heart is basically sinful, self-centered and self-serving. Thus, my time in the Word and with God will help me nurture my heart to be like David, a man after God's own heart.

I ponder, how do I respond to those who hurt my family or me. Do I get even; do I pay tit for tat? Do I show them the error of their ways? They deserve it, don't they? What's fair is fair. Then I think, was it fair to Jesus for what he suffered on the cross? No, however, he bore the pain and said, God forgive them for they know not what they do. Most people who hurt us do not realize what they do. They are acting from the carnal ways of man, which is being self-centered and self-serving. It is what I do with what they have dished out which is the key. I can get hurt and get even but end up placing myself in their tracks, crawling along like the caterpillar. Or I can let my heart filter facilitate a metamorphosis and give me insight and character to then respond in how God would expect me to because I am a man after God's own heart. It's not easy, however, it's the right thing to do. The Hawaiians say, it is pono ... it is good. Then what comes forth is "clean" and exalting God in me.
Lord, please continue to allow a metamorphosis take place in me each day through my heart filter in terms of what I see, hear and experience so heart daily so that what comes forth in my thinking, my speech and my actions are "pono" or clean, exalting You and your place in my heart. Like David, may I always be a man after your heart.
